Andrius Kubilius: The main obstacle on Georgia's path to the EU is not the Georgian people, but the "Georgian Dream" Government

First of all, it is absolutely clear that the Georgian Government has submitted a Russian-style bill on "foreign agents" in order to deliberately divert Georgia from the path to the European Union, said MEP Andrius Kubilius during the debate on the bill on "Transparency of Foreign Influence" in the European Parliament.

According to him, as long as such legislation is part of the legal order of Georgia, any decision that will lead to the admission of EU accession negotiations should be stopped.

"Secondly, it is absolutely clear that the Georgian Government has taken such a step because it deliberately wants to show the Kremlin that they are fulfilling the Kremlin's hybrid agenda. Thirdly, we want to make it clear that as long as such legislation is part of Georgia's legal order, any decision that would lead to accession negotiations, the recommended admission should be discontinued. Fourth, we want to help the Georgian people protect themselves from the Kremlin's hybrid influence on Georgia by establishing a Russian Hybrid Influence Index, which will catalog politicians and political parties from EU and EU candidate countries based on their connection to the Putin regime and their involvement in spreading Kremlin narratives; Fifth, we should call on the Council to fulfill the Copenhagen criteria for EU membership on the condition that the candidate country has the ability to resist Russia's hybrid influence. Sixth, we must clearly state that the main obstacle on Georgia's path to the European Union is not the Georgian people, but the "Georgian Dream" government," said the European parliamentarian.

He ended his speech at the plenary session of the European Parliament with Georgian words: "Hello, European Georgia!"
