EU Ambassador: An attempt to ban all opposition parties that crossed the threshold in the previous parliamentary elections - including those currently represented in Parliament—would be unprecedented in the history of the Council of Europe

An attempt to ban all opposition parties that surpassed the parliamentary threshold during the previous parliamentary elections would be unprecedented in the history of the Council of Europe. The above was stated by Paweł Herczyński, the EU Ambassador to Georgia, during a press conference.
Ambassador Herczyński emphasized that the European Union is following the proceedings ongoing in Georgia’s Constitutional Court with great concern.
“I do not wish to speculate about something that has not yet happened. We are following the proceedings ongoing at the Constitutional Court of Georgia with great concern.
A few days ago, the European Commission spokesperson articulated the Commission’s position. During a press conference, European Commissioner Kós stated very clearly: ‘Attempts to ban major opposition parties through lawsuits filed with the Constitutional Court pose a threat to the foundations of the country’s democracy.’
For my part, I can add that—considering all the member states of the Council of Europe, of which Georgia is one—an attempt to ban all opposition parties that crossed the parliamentary threshold in the last parliamentary elections—including those currently represented in Parliament—would be unprecedented in the history of the Council of Europe,” stated Herczyński.
