Kaja Kallas: The Georgian government is currently on a collision course with the European Union. Are we considering any response at this moment? We need to delve deeper into the issue regarding Georgia in January, we are not turning our backs on the Georgian people

"We need to delve deeper into the issue concerning Georgia in January. For us, the most important thing is how we respond - to clearly demonstrate that we support the Georgian people and their aspirations, and that we are not turning our backs on them - while simultaneously sending a clear message to the government that we do not support this type of policy," stated Kaja Kallas, the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy.

According to her, the Georgian government is currently on a collision course with the European Union.

"The process is suspended, as we have already noted. We support the Georgian people and their choice. In January, we will hold a more in-depth discussion with the foreign ministers regarding Georgia—specifically, how we can best support the people and their aspirations to join the European Union.

The Georgian government is currently on a collision course with the EU due to democratic backsliding. This is very clear; simply put, steps are not being taken in the right direction. Are we considering any form of response at this moment? It is too early to say, because, as I mentioned, we need to delve deeper into the issue concerning Georgia in January. There are differing views. For us, the most important thing is how to respond in a way that clearly demonstrates our support for the Georgian people and their aspirations—showing that we are not turning our backs on those who wish to see Georgia as a member of the EU—while simultaneously sending a clear message to the government that we do not support such policies," stated Kallas.
