Salome Samadashvili on border demarcation-delimitation: I have no expectation of progress as long as this government is running the country, especially against the backdrop when Azerbaijan has become a leader and the Georgian government is unable to defend its positions anywhere

I have no expectation of any progress as long as this government is running the country, especially against the backdrop when we see that Azerbaijan has today become a leading state in our region and the current government of Georgia, placed in complete isolation from all strategic partners, is no longer able to defend its own positions on any issue and anywhere at all, – this was stated by one of the leaders of “Strong Georgia – Lelo,” Salome Samadashvili, thereby assessing the statement by the Prime Minister of Georgia, Irakli Kobakhidze, regarding the David Gareja monastic complex and the Georgia-Azerbaijan border.
As Samadashvili noted, the issue of demarcation and delimitation of the Georgia-Azerbaijan border is very complex and “the process, which has been ongoing for many years, requires quite significant compromise to achieve a final agreement.”
“That shameful propaganda campaign that Bidzina Ivanishvili’s government conducted on the topic of David Gareja in 2020 – I will remind the public that they even arrested completely innocent, honest scientists in connection with this case. This shameful PR campaign, of course, did not contribute to this issue moving forward constructively. On the contrary, it created additional obstacles in the process of quite complex negotiations with our very important neighbor.
It is clear that I have no expectation of any progress as long as this government is running our country, especially against the backdrop when we see that Azerbaijan has today become a leading state in our region and the current government of Georgia, placed in complete isolation from all strategic partners, is no longer able to defend its own positions on any issue and anywhere at all,” Samadashvili noted.
For information, the Prime Minister of Georgia, Irakli Kobakhidze, spoke regarding the David Gareja monastic complex and the Georgia-Azerbaijan border. According to the Prime Minister, the Georgian side reached an agreement with the Azerbaijani side on accelerating the process of border delimitation-demarcation.
“We agreed to accelerate the processes related to border demarcation-delimitation – for many years we have had no change or progress whatsoever in terms of border demarcation-delimitation. Where we have not had progress, we want to achieve a rapid result together with our Azerbaijani friends,” the Prime Minister noted.
