Irakli Cheishvili: The European Union and ALDE are blackmailing the judges of the Constitutional Court – this is an unheard-of story, a double standard and incorrect rhetoric toward Georgia, which must definitely be changed

The European Union and ALDE are blackmailing the judges of the Constitutional Court – this is an unheard-of story, a double standard and incorrect rhetoric toward Georgia, which must definitely be changed, – this was stated by “Georgian Dream” MP Irakli Cheishvili in response to the statement circulated by ALDE.

According to him, in Europe they calmly accept attempts to ban the opposition, while in the case of Georgia they act with a double standard and blackmail the court.

“This is a double standard and an incorrect approach. At a time when the German authorities are trying to ban the main opposition party in Germany, the European Union and ALDE and similar parties and politicians do not come out and do not make such statements. For some reason, in the heart of Europe, which is called a beacon of democracy, a similar decision may even be considered justified, but when the Georgian authorities take a similar decision in Georgia – no. Unlike their opposition parties, we all know well what the ‘National Movement’ was committing and doing; they put the Georgian authorities through a firestorm of criticism, adopt resolution after resolution and meet us with sanctions. I will tell you even more: they are threatening and blackmailing the judges of the Constitutional Court. A court process is underway, and today such high-ranking officials and party leaders come out and set such demands. In other words, sanctions mean that they are blackmailing the judges with this. In independent Georgia, pressure on an independent, fair court is exactly this – it is an unheard-of story. The double approach and incorrect rhetoric toward Georgia is disturbing; the European Union must definitely change this,” Cheishvili stated.

For reference, in a statement published on October 28, ALDE notes that the ban on opposition parties will further limit democratic competition in the country. The organization demands that the process of banning the parties be stopped and that the European Union tighten personal sanctions against those responsible for carrying out political repression in Georgia.
