Tengо Tevzadze: I swear here in the Constitutional Court courtroom, before the Plenum, that I will do everything in my power to ensure that revenge against Georgia’s independence and a Soviet revanche never come to pass

“I swear here in the Constitutional Court courtroom, before the Plenum, that I will do everything in my power to ensure that revenge against Georgia’s independence and a Soviet revanche never come to pass,” said Tengo Tevzadze, a representative of the Coalition for Change, while presenting the respondent’s arguments at the Constitutional Court.

He stated that, together with his colleagues, he was defending the values that Georgian citizens held when they went to the polls on October 28, 1990, during the country’s first multiparty elections.

“Georgia’s first multiparty elections were held on October 28, 1990. I am proud to stand alongside my friends in defending the values and ideals that motivated Georgian citizens when they went to the ballot box back then. At the time, the main goal was to restore statehood and independence and reestablish the legal continuity of the Democratic Republic of 1921.

“I serve that same ideal, and here in the Constitutional Court courtroom, before the Plenum, I swear that I will do everything in my power to ensure that revenge against Georgia’s independence and a Soviet revanche never come to pass. I assume the members of the Plenum agree with me that you, too, will do the same,” Tengo Tevzadze stated.

In response to Tevzadze’s statement, Constitutional Court President Revaz Nadaraia addressed him and asked him to “get to the matter at hand.”

“I understand the significance of this day, but there is no need to talk about a ‘Soviet revanche’ or make such remarks. Get to the matter at hand,” Nadaraia said.
