The Prosecutor’s Office has arrested “Asaval-Dasavali” journalist Dito Chubinidze on charges of sabotage

The General Prosecutor’s Office has arrested Domenti (Dito) Chubinidze, a representative of the newspaper “Asaval-Dasavali,” on charges of treason against the homeland, specifically sabotage.

A briefing on this matter was held at the General Prosecutor’s Office of Georgia.

According to the agency’s explanation, “from February 2026 Dito Chubinidze has systematically been disseminating false and disinformation reports using various media outlets and social platforms.”

“The General Prosecutor’s Office of Georgia, on the basis of a court ruling, has arrested Domenti (Dito) Chubinidze, a representative of the newspaper ‘Asaval-Dasavali,’ on charges of treason against the homeland, specifically sabotage.

As is known to the public, from February 2026 Domenti Chubinidze has been systematically disseminating false and disinformation reports using various media outlets and social platforms and, on the basis of invented facts, has been claiming that the Prime Minister of Georgia, by means of a secret agreement signed with a neighboring state, transferred part of the David Gareja monastic complex to the Republic of Azerbaijan.

The investigation conducted by the General Prosecutor’s Office of Georgia has irrefutably confirmed that the establishment of the state border is carried out by an international treaty or agreement concluded with the neighboring state, which subsequently requires ratification by the Parliament of Georgia, while the authority to conduct and resolve negotiations on issues of defining and establishing the border is exclusively vested in the Governmental Commission for the Delimitation and Demarcation of the State Border of Georgia. Within the mandate of the Governmental Commission, no agreement has yet been reached with the neighboring state regarding the definition and establishment of the border in the section of the David Gareja monastic complex, and the above-mentioned normative procedure theoretically excludes the possibility of the Prime Minister of Georgia unilaterally transferring territory to another state.

Despite this, in order to create a real perception in society of the invented story of the transfer of state territory to a neighboring state, which is devoid of any legal basis, Domenti Chubinidze has repeatedly linked the death of his respondent — Lazare Jorbenadze — to a murder on the grounds of revenge, which was allegedly caused by Lazare Jorbenadze’s public disclosure of incriminating information against the Prime Minister.

By this action, Domenti Chubinidze deliberately, to the detriment of the legitimate interests of the Georgian state, carried out sabotage, thereby obstructing the normal functioning of a state agency and of the Governmental Commission for the Delimitation and Demarcation of the State Border of Georgia.

On the basis of the evidence obtained as a result of the investigation, Domenti Chubinidze is charged with treason against the homeland, specifically the fact of sabotage, which provides for a sentence of imprisonment for up to 4 years as the form and measure of punishment.

The Prosecutor’s Office will apply to the court within the time limit established by law with a request for the application of detention as a measure of restraint against the accused.

The investigation in the case continues, and we will provide the public with additional information regarding its progress and results,” the Prosecutor’s Office statement says.
