Irakli Kobakhidze: In order to accelerate the provision for IDPs, in parallel with the construction of residential buildings, a programme for satisfying IDP families with monetary compensation will be launched

According to the statement of the Prime Minister of Georgia, Irakli Kobakhidze, in order to accelerate the provision for IDPs, in parallel with the construction of residential buildings, a programme for satisfying IDP families with monetary compensation instead of housing will be launched.
As explained by the Prime Minister, participation in the programme will be voluntary. As for the amount of the compensation itself, 10 thousand lari will be determined for each member of the family.
“As you know, since 2012 the Government of Georgia has been successfully implementing the programme for the resettlement of IDPs. Compared to 2012, the budget allocated for the support of IDPs has increased 10-fold. As a result, more than 45 thousand IDP families have been transferred new well-appointed housing into ownership. In parallel, the ‘House in the Village’ programme is being successfully implemented, within the framework of which this year up to 2,000 families have been able to purchase a house in the village with state support. After the completion of the ongoing constructions, new apartments will be transferred to an additional 2,600 IDP families. However, despite these impressive results, many IDP families still remain to be satisfied. Taking into account the numbers, the full resolution of the resettlement issue will require at least an additional 10 years. Proceeding from this, in order to accelerate the processes, we have taken the decision, in parallel with the construction of residential buildings, to introduce a programme for satisfying IDP families with monetary compensation instead of housing, participation in which will be entirely voluntary. Each IDP family that has not received housing or compensation in the past will have the right to submit an application to the relevant agency of the Ministry of Internally Displaced Persons from the Occupied Territories, Labour, Health and Social Affairs of Georgia regarding the receipt of monetary compensation instead of housing. The amount of the compensation will be 10 thousand lari for each member of the IDP family. The compensation will be issued according to the order of submission of applications. 58 million lari will be allocated for this programme this year and this programme will also continue in the future. In the coming years the budget will increase even more. In parallel with the issuance of monetary compensations, the construction of residential buildings and the ‘House in the Village’ programme will continue for those IDP families that do not submit an application for the receipt of monetary compensation. I am confident that thousands of IDP families will benefit from the programme we are offering. We wish each IDP family well-being and a speedy return to their native region,” the Prime Minister stated.
