Shalva Papuashvili: With such a European Parliament, of course, we should not be expected in the European Union - We do not intend to sit next to those people who have hatred toward the Georgian people

With such a European Parliament, of course, we should not be expected in the European Union. We do not intend to sit next to those people who have hatred toward the Georgian people – we have no hope of exerting any influence on the European Parliament; this is a hopeless case, Speaker of the Georgian Parliament Shalva Papuashvili stated, responding to a draft resolution of the European Parliament that calls for the sanctioning of Bidzina Ivanishvili, Irakli Kobakhidze, Kakha Kaladze, and Shalva Papuashvili.

According to him, it is an honor that his name and surname also appeared on the list of those to be sanctioned.

“It is an honor when they name me as well in such a composition. This is already the third time they are naming me, so I have been nominated three times for this important prize from the European Parliament. I am joking, but to tell you the truth, it is difficult to assess the actions of the European Parliament without a joke. We see people who have hatred toward Georgians. I even said that it reminds me of the 1989 Congress of People’s Deputies of the Soviet Union. That congress was held after April 9, and I remember the abuse of Georgia from the tribune of the Congress of People’s Deputies. It was exactly the same aesthetic that we saw from the European Parliament. By the way, there were also Balts then, and now we also saw the speeches of Balts and the post-Soviet nomenklatura, right? It is significant whom we see, who stands out with hatred toward Georgia in the European Parliament – these are representatives of the Baltic states, members of the socialist camp, who, it seems, while supposedly distancing themselves from the Soviet Union, in reality brought something with them, and they brought this arrogant attitude toward other nations. Once again it was confirmed what we see – with such a European Parliament, of course, we should not be expected in the European Union. We do not intend to sit next to those people who have hatred toward the Georgian people and display this hatred from the tribune of the European Parliament. We have no hope of exerting any influence on the European Parliament; this is a hopeless case, therefore our only hope is that there will be new elections and that European citizens will elect dignified representatives of their countries,” Papuashvili stated.

For information: a group of Members of the European Parliament, including Rasa Juknevičienė and David McAllister, prepared a draft resolution that calls for the sanctioning of representatives of the Georgian authorities. The authors of the draft resolution call on the European Union and member states to impose targeted sanctions against Bidzina Ivanishvili, Irakli Kobakhidze, Shalva Papuashvili, and Kakha Kaladze.
