"If someone realizes they committed a wrongful act and expresses remorse, that is entirely welcome. We can reiterate our pledge that an admission of guilt and an expression of remorse will be met with an appropriate response—specifically, the release of the individuals involved." This was Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze’s response to a journalist's question regarding the plea agreements concluded with Murtaz Zodelava and Lasha Beridze, who had been detained in connection with the events of October 4.
As the Prime Minister noted, "Although the crime committed on October 4 was an attempt to stage a coup and overthrow the government, the ruling team is prepared to take appropriate steps should there be an admission of guilt."
"If someone realizes they committed a wrongful act—a crime—and repents for it, that is entirely welcome. We can reiterate our pledge that such an admission and expression of remorse will be met with an appropriate response, which entails the release of the individuals involved. Even though the crime committed on October 4 was extremely grave—an attempt to stage a coup and overthrow the government—we remain ready to take the necessary steps should there be an admission of guilt.
As for the opposition's reaction, it speaks volumes about their morality. They are in disarray regarding these statements: some offer praise, others do not, while some even vilify such individuals. It is utterly baffling to see someone who was themselves complicit in violent events—yet remains free—criticizing a person who has ended up in prison. This once again highlights the nature of these people's morality. There is not a single person within the radical opposition who possesses any morality."
Regarding Paata Burchuladze's son... "In general, a 'Pavlik Morozov' mentality is characteristic of young supporters of the United National Movement, and this statement serves as further proof of that. We recall similar statements made by other children—specifically regarding Chakhunashvili. The young 'National' is distinguished by this 'Pavlik Morozov' mentality, which is a troubling phenomenon," stated Irakli Kobakhidze.
For context, according to the Prosecutor's Office of Georgia, Murtaz Zodelava and Lasha Beridze—who were convicted in the 'October 4' case—have admitted to the crime, expressed remorse, and submitted requests to the Prosecutor's Office for a plea agreement. Following this announcement, Shukri Burchuladze—the son of Paata Burchuladze (who was also convicted in the 'October 4' case)—commented on the plea agreement requests made by Zodelava and Beridze, stating that "leaders fighting against the regime have laid down their arms in a disgraceful manner; commanders should not abandon their soldiers on the battlefield."
