Parents hold a protest outside Tbilisi Public School No. 21, where classes have been suspended from today due to the building being deemed unsafe

A protest is taking place outside Tbilisi Public School No. 21. The demonstration was prompted by a message sent to parents stating that classes at the school would be suspended from September 18 due to the unsafe condition of the building.

As one of the parents told Interpressnews, it is not yet known exactly how the educational process will continue. However, according to the parent, the school principal has proposed switching to remote learning.

“The principal’s position is positive; she wants the children to study online for one week. In the meantime, they can find a facility where the entire school can continue studying without splitting up the classes. Two years ago, the school passed accreditation. What is interesting is how the building became classified as a fourth-degree unsafe structure within these two years,” said Ekaterine Narsia.

Teacher Nika Khachidze also spoke about the issue, noting that the school received the information yesterday. According to him, it is concerning that, despite the findings, children spent three days in the school building together with teachers and parents.

“We do not have precise information yet. We are waiting for the assessment and a meeting with a representative of the ministry. We found out yesterday evening, at 8 p.m., and it was very unexpected for us as well, so we cannot say anything definitively yet. It is concerning that the building is unsafe and poses a risk to students, while for three days we were in this building together with the children and their parents. That is what I am most outraged about. We are also waiting for further details,” Khachidze said.

For reference, parents publicly expressed their dissatisfaction on social media yesterday and announced that they would hold a protest.
