Penitentiary Service: Each convict is provided with three meals a day - the accusation related to malnutrition is another lie

The accusation of malnutrition is another lie - as a result of the reform carried out in the penitentiary system in 2019, each accused/convict is provided with three meals a day, - the Special Penitentiary Service has released a statement about this.
According to their explanation, in the Georgian penitentiary system, the feeding of accused/convicts is carried out in accordance with menus tailored to their health status.
As noted in the statement, the accusation about the malnutrition of prisoners is only a continuation of another campaign of lies against the penitentiary service.
“Regarding another false information spread by politically biased media outlets – “TV Pirveli” and “Formula”, we would like to clarify:
The priority of the Special Penitentiary Service is the maximum protection of the rights of each accused/convict and the promotion of their resocialization-rehabilitation.
As for the accusation related to malnutrition, we note that this is another lie. As a result of the reform carried out in the penitentiary system in 2019, each accused/convict is provided with three meals a day. Nutritionists invited by the Special Penitentiary Service have developed new standard, seasonal and health-related nutritional menus (for minors, pregnant and lactating women, people hospitalized due to illnesses and those who have undergone surgery, etc.). They also determined a new daily calorie intake (2300-3700 kcal). Accordingly, in the Georgian penitentiary system, the feeding of the accused/convicts is carried out in accordance with menus tailored to their health status.
It is also worth noting that the Special Penitentiary Service actively controls the food service, and in case of any violation, the service company is subject to sanctions provided for in the contract. Therefore, talking about malnutrition of prisoners is just a continuation of another campaign of lies against the Penitentiary Service,” reads the statement.
