Councils addressing gender equality issues to be retained in municipal bodies and councils

Councils working on gender equality issues will be retained in municipal bodies and local councils.
This decision was discussed by David Matikashvili, a Georgian Dream MP, during a session of the Parliamentary Committee on Human Rights. Matikashvili presented amendments to the Law on Gender Equality and related legislative proposals for a second reading and article-by-article review.
The legislative package proposes removing the term “gender” from the legal framework. Additionally, an initially introduced and first-reading-approved bill aimed to abolish gender equality councils in parliament and municipal bodies.
"The initial version proposed eliminating these councils in both parliament and municipal bodies. However, we decided to retain relevant structural units within local councils and municipal administrations. These bodies will continue working on gender equality issues," Matikashvili stated.
According to him, further clarifications and adjustments to the bill will be discussed during the parliamentary plenary session.
