Public Defender: Women still face numerous challenges – We call on the Government to strengthen efforts and take effective steps to ensure the protection of women’s rights

On March 8, International Women’s Day, we join the international community in embracing the theme: “For Every Woman and Girl: Rights, Equality, and Empowerment.” This year’s theme highlights the necessity of ensuring equal rights and opportunities for all women and girls, urging us to take stronger action to achieve real change, according to a statement released by the Public Defender of Georgia.

The Ombudsman calls on the government to strengthen its efforts and take concrete steps to ensure the protection of women's rights in the country.

“Women play a crucial role in the development of our country. Their work, efforts, and courage contribute to creating a fairer and more equal society. However, many challenges remain, including domestic and gender-based violence, economic barriers, difficulties in career advancement, the fight against stereotypes, and improving women’s legal protection and access to essential services.

In this regard, it is particularly concerning that the Parliament of Georgia has abolished the mandatory gender quota mechanism and introduced legislative amendments on gender equality at a time when women continue to face both visible and invisible barriers in political and social life.

The Public Defender of Georgia urges the government to enhance its efforts and take concrete measures to ensure the protection of women's rights in the country,” the statement reads.
