Ministry of Foreign Affairs condemns the so-called presidential elections in the occupied Tskhinvali region

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs condemns the April 10 so-called presidential elections in the occupied Tskhinvali region / South Ossetia.
According to the statement, the so-called elections is another illegal act of the Russian Federation against the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Georgia, which is completely contrary to the norms and principles of international law.
"Such provocative actions are aimed at legitimizing the illegal occupation of Georgian regions and ethnic cleansing of Georgians.
Under the conditions of illegal occupation and effective control carried out by the occupation force in the two inseparable regions of Georgia, the so-called elections will not have any legal consequences. At the same time, there will be no legal consequences for the so-called referendum on joining the Russian Federation, which is another illegal step towards annexation.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs calls on the Russian Federation to respect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Georgia, to fulfill its international obligations, including the EU-brokered ceasefire agreement of 12 August 2008, and to reverse the illegal decision on recognition of so-called independence of occupied territories.
We call on the international community to properly assess and respond effectively to the Russian Federation's illegal action to undermine Georgia's sovereignty and territorial integrity," the statement said.
