Sergei Shamba says it is necessary to talk to Georgia as it should be interested in opening of railway between Russia and Armenia through Abkhazia

Possible opening of railway between Russia and Armenia through Abkhazia was discussed 10 years ago, but the agreement could not be reached due to the position of the "Georgian side", - the Secretary of the so-called National Security Council of Abkahzia, Sergei Shamba said.

"Serious discussions were held on this issue, but no agreement was reached because the Georgian side insisted that the railway in Abkhazia should be called what it was called in the Soviet period - the Abkhazian section of the Georgian railway, and the Abkhaz side did not agree to it," Shamba said.

According to him, as the issue of opening the railway through the North Caucasus has been raised again, "the proposal of the Abkhazian parliament is logical."

"If we are talking about the development of peace initiatives in the Caucasus, then, of course, we must open all communications, we need communication and trade," Shamba said.

He said that it is time to start peaceful coexistence in the region, which is guaranteed by economic processes in which all stakeholders are involved.

"In this regard, it is necessary to talk to Georgia, because it should be interested in opening the railway," - said Shamba.
