National Platform: The violent and reputation-damaging rhetoric towards the European Union, its member states, the United States of America and all those international partners is alarming – we call on Georgian Dream anot to support the anti-constitutional and anti-European bill

The National Platform of Georgia calls on the authorities not to support the "anti-constitutional and anti-European bill" and to stop the rhetoric that "contributes to the confrontation and division of the society".

The platform issued a statement and appeals to the authorities to continue actively working on the fulfillment of the 9 conditions of the European Union.

At the same time, the members of the Eastern Partnership Civil Society Forum condemn "the fact of the use of special equipment and excessive force by the law enforcement agencies, without warning and beyond the proportionality test, while breaking up a peaceful protest."

"The National Platform of Georgia once again expresses its deep concern and worry regarding the draft law "On transparency of foreign influence" adopted by the parliamentary majority in the second reading.

We believe that the said bill deepens polarization and is directed against both the internal democratic development of the country and the foreign policy course defined by the country's constitution - the process of joining the European Union.

Calling the civil society and independent media organizations as agents of the interests of a foreign power insults our dignity, harms the long and vital history of Georgia's cooperation with international strategic partners, and threatens the current progress that covers all sectors of the country.

The violent and reputation-damaging rhetoric towards the European Union, its member states, the United States of America and all those international partners who, for decades, have stood by Georgia for democracy, human rights, security, economic growth, preservation of cultural heritage and environment, energy development, prosperity and state reconstruction is alarming.

The proposed draft law does not serve its stated purpose - transparency. It harms and threatens to destroy the civil sector and independent media because of the heavy, degrading stigma attached to it.

Members of the platform categorically condemn the use of special equipment by the law enforcement agencies to break up the peaceful demonstration, without warning and beyond the proportionality test, as well as the use of excessive force and targeted violence against the opposition leaders. We call on the Georgian authorities and law enforcement agencies not to go beyond the scope of the Constitution and, in the exercise of their powers, not to prevent the participants of the rally from enjoying the rights established by the Constitution.

We, the members of the Eastern Partnership Civil Society Forum, share the high goals of the country's independence, democratic development and EU integration, we address and call on the Georgian Dream party and MPs: not to support the mentioned anti-constitutional and anti-European bill; stop the rhetoric that promotes the division and confrontation of the society, which, according to historical experience, brings the most serious consequences; immediately continue actively working on the fulfillment of the 9 conditions of the European Union; Stop sabotaging the European integration process so that the country can move to the stage of negotiations and not lose the already achieved progress; To ensure the protection of the right to assembly and demonstration guaranteed by the Constitution of Georgia", reads the statement.
