It is disappointing when the representative of such an important partner country speaks in such a way, which has no economic basis at all - it is exaggerated that the economic growth of Georgia is only related to the war and the geopolitical situation, - the Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development of Georgia Levan Davitashvili told reporters.
According to the minister's assessment, the war factor has a certain positive effect on the economy of Georgia, although the economic growth of Georgia is largely due to the reforms that the government implemented years ago.
"It is quite disappointing when a representative of such an important partner country speaks in such a way, which has no economic basis at all. We have always talked about the effect of the Russian factor and the war factor in our economy. Professionals agree that this certainly has a positive effect on economic growth. However, it is exaggerated that the economic growth of Georgia in recent years, and especially in the last year, is related only to the war and the geopolitical situation.
I can tell you simply: many countries, in the same geography, which have more liberal economic relations with Russia, are not growing at the same high rate as Georgia is growing. We have many limiting factors, despite this, Georgia's economy is the fastest growing not only in Europe, but also in relation to the countries of the South Caucasus and Central Asia. At the same time, it is not just our estimate that we will grow rapidly in the coming years. This is confirmed by the forecasts of the most authoritative international financial institutions, this is the medium-term forecast of the same International Monetary Fund, that Georgia will grow faster than, for example, CIS member states. Therefore, there can be an effect of 1-2%, which increases the role and importance of the middle corridor, which increases activities in the field of transport and logistics, and this is a positive factor for our economy. But to a large extent, the economic growth of Georgia is due to the important reforms that we carried out years ago", said Levan Davitashvili.
For information, in an interview with BMGtv, the German ambassador to Georgia, Peter Fischer, talked about Georgia-Germany relations and said that the high rate of economic growth is a windfall from Russia's attack on Ukraine, and this type of profit does not continue.
"I noticed that in Georgia they say: 'We have such high [economic] growth rates, higher than the pesky Europeans. Germans have no economic growth at all, while Georgians have 10% growth."
This is a windfall from Russia's attack on Ukraine. This type of profit does not last. I see a lot of structural problems. I see a challenge regarding the value of the GEL. I see the fluctuation of prices of shares of Georgian companies placed on the stock exchanges", said Fisher.
